Nine years ago, City Harvest Church member Roland Poon Swee Kay publicly apologised to church founder Kong Hee (above) and his singer-wife Ho Yeow Sun for alleging that church funds were used to promote her singing career.
Yesterday, Mr Poon would have felt vindicated when the Commissioner of Charities revealed that it had uncovered financial irregularities of at least $23 million from the church’s funds over a period of three years – from 2007 to 2010. The charities watchdog ordered that Mr Kong, Ms Ho and six others be suspended from their posts in the charity.
The Commercial Affairs Department moved in to arrest Mr Kong at his $9.3-million Sentosa Cove penthouse yesterday morning. Four others were also arrested. They are expected to be charged today with being in a conspiracy to commit criminal breach of trust as an agent.
