THE retiree was hoping to have a quiet lunch at a coffee shop near his flat in York Hill near Outram Park, yesterday.

But before Mr Jiang Cai Gui’s food was served, a friend rushed to tell him that his flat was on fire.

By the time the 79-year-old returned to his block, firefighters from the Singapore Civil Defence Force had almost put the fire out.
