IT WAS rice - some 300kg of it - that was mixed with soil and gravel after it had spilled out from a lorry that had rolled down a slope and up onto a pavement.

But for the residents who stayed around Block 156 at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, it didn't matter at all as they scooped up the rice from the floor into sacks and plastic bags.

They were given the green light to gather up the rice by an operations manager of rice distributor See Hoy Chan Pte Ltd, which owned the lorry, who felt it was "better than leaving it there on the pavement".

Although one woman was hit by the lorry as it was rolling, she wasn't seriously injured.
