Mr Ram Puneet Tiwary, who was found guilty of murdering his two Singaporean flatmates in Sydney, Australia, walked out a free man after eight years when the court of appeal in Australia overturned the 2009 conviction.

He was first convicted in 2006 and jailed for life for killing Mr Tony Tan Poh Chuan and Mr Tay Chow Lyang, both 26, in the flat they shared. The case went through a re-trial in 2009 after an appeal but he was still found guilty.

Another appeal saw Tiwary freed this month.

For Mr Tiwary’s family, the main emotion was relief. But his acquittal came as a shock to Madam Chiew Lee Hua, 64, whose son, Mr Tan, was one of the victims.
