On the first day of the Committee of Inquiry’s public hearing into last December's MRT disruptions, two big questions were touched on.
1. Did the new fourth generation trains, which were introduced into the system in the middle of last year, contribute to the breakdowns?
2. Was SMRT’s maintenance regime up to par?
As for the first, experts said the new trains did not contribute to the breakdowns.
For the second, both SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) had different views.
SMRT said its maintenance standards are above par, while LTA said that SMRT’s maintenance expenditure of trains and tracks did not keep pace with the increase in ridership.
