This was the game Manchester City's players had to stand up and be counted.
Almost an entire season of hard work hinged on 90 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, in yesterday's match against Arsenal.
On another day, defeat by Arsenal would have even been acceptable. But not on this occasion. An eight-point lead had opened up earlier in the day, following Manchester United's 2-0 win over 10-man Queens Park Rangers.
All eyes were therefore on City, on whether they could muster the emphatic response their situation required.
All the City fans got was a whimper of a reaction. In the end, City lost the game 1-0, in a match they should have lost by an even wider margin.
With six matches left to play, surely this is game over for City as far as the title race is concerned.
