TNP PICTURE: GARY GOH
Looking for women with brains didn’t work last year. So this year, the organiser of Miss Singapore World is employing a controversial new strategy – only pan-Asian looking women need apply.
A spokesman for Limelite Productions, which is organising the pageant, said: “In the past, we sent girls who were really tall, really fair, had really dark hair, and who answered questions well. But the formula hasn’t worked. So we are experimenting with different strategies, and this year, we have decided to send a representative who looks pan-Asian.
“To achieve this, apart from picking girls with pan-Asian features, we will have their hair lightened, their skin tanned, and they will also wear contact lenses to lighten their eye colour for the rest of the competition,” the spokesman added.

Hi there I find this article
Hi there I find this article and idea behind this years miss Singapore competition rather sexist. You began you article by mentioning that your hunt for brains last year was unsuccessful. So what does it mean for last years participants ? Shouldn't such a competition, mean that we send in competitors who represent Singapore, speak well and are intelligent? It is a Competition on a global scale and I think that although looks do play a part that we send a representative who can converse and impress the judges with her wits and looks! If I have a daughter or am still teaching today I will boycott and discourage this among my own students. This is truly an insult to women in Singapore and I wonder if these young girls who are participating in this year's competion know the criteria of being chosen? Or is it not stated clearly for them, to which I will not be too surprised!
