SMRT’s executive director and interim chief executive officer, Mr Tan Ek Kia, apologised to commuters for the recent service disruptions.
In a press conference on Tuesday (April 24), he said that the April 18 Circle Line disruption was due to a short circuit in a defective power cable.
In the ensuing power trip, the backup battery supply kicked in, but the alarm that should have alerted SMRT staff to the use of the backup battery did not work. So the battery drained out after four hours.
Mr Tan also announced details of a $900 million plan for additional maintenance, upgrading and renewal of the train system. The plan, which includes both ongoing and new measures, starts this year and continues until 2019.
