Drug offender escapes gallows after reduced charge

March 6, 2012 - 1:55am

A Malaysian drug trafficker escaped the gallows yesterday after pleading guilty to a reduced charge.

Thong Ah Fat, 33, was originally sentenced to hang in August 2010 for drug trafficking.

Drug traffickers face the death penalty if they are caught with more than 15g of heroin.

But the Court of Appeal ordered a re-trial last November after it ruled that the judge who convicted Thong then did not provide clear enough reasons for his decision.

Thong was sentenced yesterday to 22 years’ jail and 15 strokes of the cane for bringing in not less than 14.99g of heroin into Singapore.
