Do you think it is hip and cool to use expletives in your speech?
If your answer is “yes”, then you probably belong to the younger generation who thinks that it was cool for Miss Trinetta Chong to end her speech with the F-word at her convocation ceremony last week.
In the aftermath of Miss Chong’s speech, a vigorous debate has flared - both on andoff line - on the appropriateness of the F-word in Singapore’s cultural context.
One camp feel that the use of the F-word in public and in a formal setting is inappropriate. On the other side, many also feel that furore is over-wrought and people shouldn't be so "uptight".
