THE Presidential elections must be held by August 31 and we may see former member of parliament Tan Cheng Bock run for the presidency.

Candidates who wish to run for President can pick up forms to apply for certificates of eligibility from June 1 onwards. Applications will close on the third day after the Writ of Election is issued.

The application forms can be obtained from the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee at the Elections Department on weekdays from 9am to 5pm or Saturdays from 9am to 12.30 pm.

Speaking to The Straits Times on Thursday, Dr Tan, 71, said: "Many people have been urging me to stand as president, and I am very honoured. But there are rules I have to follow.

"One rule is I must apply for the certificate of eligibility first."

There were no contests in the last two presidential elections.
