When Waterways Watch Society’s chairman Eugene Heng looks at the river, he sees rubbish. But unlike many people who ignore the trash, the 63-year-old and his volunteers clear the offending items.

Based under Nicoll Highway’s Merdeka Bridge, the NGO, which has a core group of six to seven members, patrols on land and water every weekend, picking up what escapes the 120 full-time workers cleaning up the Marina catchment daily.
