He makes the past come alive

He uses role-play and other student-centric teaching methods to make his history lessons more engaging.

Yesterday, Mr Melvin Tay, 36, was presented with the Outstanding History Teacher Award for his efforts.

The accolade, which is given by the History Association of Singapore, is for secondary or junior college teachers who have made exemplary contributions to the teaching of history.

Mr Tay, the head of department for humanities at Yishun Town Secondary School, believes that there is life in a "dead" subject.
