When he heard cries of “fire!”, his instinct was to dash straight to the flat where the blaze was.

There could be people trapped in there, Mr Mohamad Sufardi Senin, 26, thought.

Although the front gate of the 15th-storey flat was locked, he used brute strength to force it open. Finding no one in the flat after he rushed in, he found an extinguisher and put out the blaze in the kitchen.

Yesterday, for his act of bravery, Mr Sufardi, a warehouse supervisor, was presented with a public spiritedness award by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
