Republic Polytechnic (RP) students emerged the big winners at the Live Mix Maestro Inter-Tertiary DJ Competition finals last Thursday.
Mr Mohammad Shai Fudin Suhaimi (above), 21, a final-year RP student, beat more than 40 applicants from local polytechnics and universities to win the top prize, which included Pioneer DJ gear, headphones and a Lenovo ThinkPad.
The runner-up, Mr Rayton Ng (also known as DJ Ray), 20, is also from RP.
RP also scored as the organisers of the event to find Singapore’s next turntable whiz - the show at Phuture went off without a hitch.
On the prospects for DJs, DJ Shai, who spins once or twice a month at Sentosa’s Bikini Bar, where he’s a guest DJ, said: "Many may think that deejaying isn't a 'proper' job, but it's really a profession that requires skills and knowledge."
