Gambling: Early exposure may mean more problems later

May 3, 2012 - 11:43pm

A friendly game of poker with the children to mark the festivities may not be so innocent.

Young people who have been exposed early to gambling may end up as problem gamblers themselves, said psychiatrists.

A recent local study revealed that one-third of pathological gamblers who are seeking treatment were exposed to gambling before they turned 18.

And that's where the danger lies - when one perceives social gambling as harmless, one tends to let one's down and put himself or herself at a greater risk of getting problem or pathological gambling, said consultant psychiatrist, Dr Thomas Lee.
