Over the weekend, Dr Paul Ho invited friends and family to his home at Eng Kong Crescent, near Upper Bukit Timah Road. They were served popiah (below), satay and cupcakes, and they sat around and chatted.
At another home, guests of Mr Alan Yong were treated to a live performance by a rock-acoustic band (above) at Eastwood Terrace in Bedok.
House parties? Actually, they were funeral wakes.
Dr Ho's wife, Mrs Joyce Ho, 48, died of cancer on April 28, while Mr Yong's wife, Ms Evelyn Teo, died of cancer on May 3, aged 39.
Funeral directors The New Paper spoke to said that although still rare, they have seen an increasing number of funeral wakes where families hold unusual events to celebrate the life of the deceased rather than mourn the death.
