Singapore was named the best performing country at the end of the two-day South-east Asia Youth Athletics Championships here yesterday.

While the Republic's haul of one gold, 10 silvers and nine bronzes pales in comparison to the likes of Thailand (11 golds), Malaysia (9), Vietnam (7) and Indonesia (6), Singapore was awarded the accolade - a first in the competition's history - because it collected the most number of points from all its athletes who competed in finals.

The format was decided at a meeting during last November's South-east Asia Games in Palembang to encourage participation among the countries.

Singapore's lone gold medal was won by hurdler Jannah Wong, who clocked 14.6 seconds in the final on Sunday morning.
