Swimmer Joseph Schooling could be the youngest athlete ever to clinch the Sportsman of the Year award, with the selection committee due to make a decision on Friday.
The 16-year-old (above) is the hot favourite for the award, according to observers in the local sporting fraternity The New Paper spoke to. The previous youngest winner was bowler Lim Zhong, who clinched the award at 18 in 2000.
Joseph made waves in the pool last year, breaking several national records and clinching two golds at his South-east Asia Games debut last November. He is still the only Singaporean swimmer to qualify for the London Olympics this year on merit so far.
The observers also picked shuttler Fu Mingtian and swimmer Tao Li as favourites for the Sportswoman of the Year accolade, with bowler Cherie Tan also a strong contender.
