Swimmer Joseph Schooling and shuttler Fu Mingtian were awarded the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year respectively at Tuesday night's Singapore Sports Awards at the Raffles City Convention Centre.

Joseph, 16, is the youngest athlete to receive the men's senior accolade, but was in the US and having exams. His mother May received the award from President Tony Tan Keng Yam on his behalf.

Fu, 21, said she put the award on a par with the South-east Asia Games women's singles gold medal she won in Jakarta last year, adding that the accolade would give her extra motivation to work harder after missing out on a spot at this year's London Olympics.

Swimmers Quah Zheng Wen and Amanda Lim clinched the Sportsboy and Sportsgirl of the Year awards, while bowling's William Woo won his second consecutive Coach of the Year award.
