Unknown to the illegal gamblers, closed-circuit television cameras captured their every move. And police officers who saw them setting up betting tables then notified their colleagues who swooped in and arrested them.

These mechanical eyes on the ground help the police monitor crime at hotspots, especially in Geylang, said Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) How Kwang Hwee, the commander of Bedok Division.

It has been effective in bringing down crime rates, with a 13.5 per cent drop in five major crimes in the Division last year.
