Little Nur dies in hospital

June 10, 2012 - 1:49am

The four-year-old girl died in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital at 3.40am yesterday when her heart failed.

Adlea Ry’Kyla Muhammad Ghazali (above), known affectionately as Nur, was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and is unable to pump blood efficiently.

TNP first wrote about the little girl in mid-May. Her heart was failing, and had been given weeks to live.

She needed a transplant but there is no such programme for young children here.

There was a small ray of hope. A New York hospital was looking at her case.

Kind-hearted strangers came together and raised more than $400,000 in less than three weeks.

The efforts to collect donations for her transplant included an online appeal which led to more than $300,000 being collected, a cycling event and a 12-hour concert in Bishan Park.

Hours after the New York hospital said yes, Nur's heart gave out.

Nur's parents say they now intend to use the money to help other children battling critical illnesses.
