The long way round to a hard-earned diploma

MISS Tan Yee Ling could hardly speak a word of English when she crossed the Causeway to Singapore at a tender age of nine.

She struggled throughout her education and failed her O Levels - twice.

Things started to look brighter when Miss Tan, now 26, became the top student at ITE East and qualified to enter Republic Polytechnic.

But her worries would continue when her father was diagnosed with a heart condition.
