Madonna's 2008 album Hard Candy revealed that the singer (above) was ageing neither gracefully nor interestingly, but the 53-year-old’s latest effort, MDNA, is a return to form.

MDNA, out here next Monday, has been overwhelmingly well-received by critics.

But is that enough to put Madonna ahead of the pack against younger contemporaries like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna?
