Maid jailed for abusing 80-year-old woman

An Indonesian maid was sentenced to three months and two weeks in jail for assaulting her employer's 80-year-old mother, and stealing money from the family.

Finance assistant Julie Chong Le Kuin, 46, hired Indonesian maid Jariyah, 24, last September to take care of her mother, who suffers from dementia.

The court heard that Jariyah assaulted the elderly woman because she was annoyed with her for making the job difficult.

Observers told The New Paper that while such an incident is regrettable, it also further underscores the need for domestic maids to have the correct training when working with families in need.
