A macaque monkey in Indonesia stole a camera from a wildlife photographer before snapping himself in a variety of poses, reported The Guardian.

Photographer David Slater, 46, set his camera up on a tripod but he left his equipment alone for a moment.

To his surprise, he found the animal monkeying around with it when he returned.

He told the newspaper: "They were quite mischievous, jumping all over my equipment. One hit the button. The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it.

"At first it scared the rest of them away but they soon came back. It was amazing to watch. He must have taken hundreds of pictures by the time I got my camera back."

The crested black macaque is a threatened species that lives in the northeast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and smaller neighbouring islands.
