No proven striker, so Portugal pay price

Just not good enough.

That is our analyst Ray Houghton's verdict of Portugal, after they were dumped out of Euro 2012 this morning (Singapore time). The lack of a proven goalscorer was their biggest shortcoming and what cost them a place in the final.

It wasn't just consigned to the 120 minutes played, but defender Bruno Alves' miss in the penalty shoot-out further exemplified the absence of a natural finisher in Portgual's ranks.
