Some Singaporeans are choosing to eschew the condo route and they are pouring money into sprucing up their HDB flats.

It typically costs $40,000 to $60,000 to do up a five-room HDB resale flat.

But this new breed of home owners are spending twice as much or more - some spend up to $180,000 - just to achieve the dream look for their personal pads, even if these are located in modest (and sometimes old) HDB estates.
