Spain striker Fernando Torres was almost the hero for Spain in their 1-1 Euro 2012 Group C draw against Italy this morning (Singapore time).

The Chelsea forward, who replaced Cesc Fabregas in the 74th minute, had two golden chances to bag all three points for the European and world champions but was let down by his poor judgment and finishing.

Torres has been in the shadow of David Villa for during their victorious Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup campaigns.

The stage is set for him to shine in Poland and Ukraine and, with Villa out, he could be the trumpcard up del Bosque’s sleeve.
