Two years ago on this date, flash floods brought Orchard Road to a standstill.

Liat Towers and Lucky Plaza were the biggest casualties then.

While Liat Towers transformed into a flood fortress - beefing up defences with a pop-up gate, portable slide-in barriers and a perimeter wall - after the incident, Lucky Plaza has relied on old-fashioned sandbags.

But that's about to change. A pop-up flood gate, expected to cost more than a million dollars, is now in the works.
