Rio debuts big worldwide

Ahead of its US release, Rio has proven to be a hit worldwide.

The film, about birds who embark on a Brazilian adventure, is voiced by stars Anne Hathaway, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Rodrigo Santoro and Jane Lynch (Glee), among others. It has collected US$55 million to date.

The movie opened at No. 1 in 32 countries, including Mexico, Germany, and China. Over 70 per cent of ticket sales came from 3-D theatres.

The mobile app Angry Birds Rio - a tie-up between Rovio, the folks behind popular mobile game Angry Birds, and Twentieth Century Fox - is also proving popular worldwide.

Last week, PCMag.com reported that the app had been downloaded over 10 million times since its debut on March 22.

The app is available for free on the Android market and for US$0.99 on the iTunes store.
