Science + Manga = Architecture

She was a science student who loved drawing, and especially loved drawing manga.

So Ms Amanda Yeo, 20, chose to study architecture in the polytechnic, because she wanted a course that combined science and design.

Her mother, who brought her and her brother up single-handedly after their father left them when they were young, wasn't sure how useful the course would be.

But this Friday, Ms Yeo will be the first Singapore Polytechnic student to receive the Tan Kay Yong Gold medal, an award given to the top student in design and creative arts.
