Should we have a sex offender registry?

The debate is not new and is not limited to the Singapore experience.

But the issue of whether we should have a sex offender registry has come up again following the conviction of Jonathan Wong (above), 25, who was recently sentenced to five years' jail after having underage sex. He is now on the UK's sex offender register after he was caught there in possession of kiddie porn.

Those in favour of having a registry argue that it serves the public interest to keep people informed.

Those who oppose it say it will hinder attempts to reintegrate ex-offenders back into society.
