S'porean in road accident in NZ intends to pay rest of compensation

He has paid part of the court-ordered compensation, but he is not trying to get out of paying the rest, said a Singaporean tourist who was convicted of careless driving in New Zealand.

Mr Wong Teck Kai was ordered by the Christchurch District Court to pay a reparation of NZ$5,000 (S$5,060) to a woman driver he hit.

He paid NZ$1,000 and flew back to Singapore last Thursday.

Mr Wong, a research and development manager here, had been driving a rented luxury motor home when he failed to give way and crashed into a car driven by New Zealander Eliza Anderson on June 6.

Mr Wong said he plans to pay the remaining fine of NZ$4,000 by the due date, which is on July 10, from Singapore.
