THEY thought out of the cigarette box to hide their ill-gotten wares.

Illegal cigarette peddlers have tried to throw the authorities off their tracks in a variety of unusual ways.

Take this device: It's painted grey, made of metal and comes with a lock. Just like any other electrical meter box.

When Singapore Customs officers came across the box last year while out on one of their regular patrols in Geylang, they did a double take.

What they discovered when they opened the box wasn't wires but a trove of illegal cigarettes.
