THEY can be easily spotted in their bright orange T-shirts.

They are The New Paper Big Walk ambassadors.

The team will join participants on the route to provide directions or answer any queries they have about the event itself.

Yes, it's two days to the Big Walk, which President Tony Tan Keng Yam will flag off at 7.30am on Monday, Nov 7, at the Sentosa Boardwalk.

If you are unsure about what to do on that day, watch out for the definitive guide to the Big Walk in The New Paper on Sunday.

If you still have questions during the event, don't be afraid to ask the team in orange, whose members are looking forward to meet you.

As correspondent Arulnathan John said: "It's a big event and a great opportunity to meet The New Paper readers face-to-face."

Mr Matthew Thommen, a copy-editor with The New Paper for 14 years, has fond memories of past Big Walks.

He recalled an incident of the event in 1999 when it was held at the National Stadium.

He said: "There was a heavy downpour. We were drenched, but continued walking on Nicoll Highway.

"Along the way, I came across a Big Walker who had dressed up as Santa Claus, although it was in May, for the fancy dress contest.

"He was ringing his bell and wringing the water out of his beard at the same time. It was a pity I didn't have my camera with me then."

Not only will The New Paper team be out walking with the participants, their family members will also be joining in.

Infographics journalist Kelvin Chan will be joined by seven family members, including his wife, Madam Lim Soon Eng, and his two children, Kieran, eight, and Raelynn, 12.

"It's a big event not just for The New Paper family, it's also one of the traditions of my own family to take part in the Big Walk," Mr Chan said.

Apart from staff members, a group of five 15-year-old student volunteers from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) have also been helping out in the preparations leading up to the Big Walk.

Said Lee Yun Ze, 15: "We have been helping with administrative matters such as data entry. We will also be assisting the ground crew during the Big Walk to give directions to the participants.

"We are very excited to be join The New Paper team as ambassadors. Some of our other schoolmates have signed up for The Big Walk and will be looking out for us."
