Tragic end to a fishball noodle supper

Tan Teck Soon, 19, was sentenced to 14 years in jail for pushing his girl Miss Chong Kar Yan off a 12th storey parapet. He then jumped – and survived.

The young couple's late night supper date turned tragic after an argument over chopsticks.

As fate would have it, just a year before the accident Miss Chong was told by a fortune teller that she would die young. Her life ended abruptly when she was just 20.

Tan on the other hand, cheated death twice. His murder charge was reduced to manslaughter. A murder charge would have meant the death penalty.

The young couple had an argument as they were having a bowl of fishball noodles. The 19-year-old girl asked her boyfriend, Tan Teck Soon, 20, to get an extra pair of chopsticks but he refused. She became unhappy and refused to talk to him.

Their quarrel continued even after he took her home and got so heated he ended up pushing her off the parapet from the 12-storey. He then jumped.

Miss Chong’s mother said that her daughter had told her about the encounter with the fortune-teller but she was happy-go-lucky and did not take it seriously. She spoke to The New Paper about her daughter’s relationship and her disapproval of Tan.
