An estimated 6,000 devotees turned up at the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery yesterday evening to take part in an annual event, known as the "three-steps, one-bow" ritual.

The ritual, held on the eve of Vesak Day, which falls today, remains a key segment of the festival, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and eventual nirvana of Buddha.

It has been held at the monastery for the past 27 years and is a way for devotees to pay their respects to Buddha, as they prostrate and chant mantras all along the 2km perimeter of the monastery.
