THE funeral rites of a loved one has divided a family into two factions.

One side, comprising the older family members, want their matriarch, Madam Ng Siang Eng, 97, to make her final journey with Buddhist rites.

The opposing side, led by Madam Ng's maternal granddaughter, is insisting on a Christian funeral.

The odd thing is the family dispute is raging even though Madam Ng is still alive.

Over the years, Singapore has witnessed the rise of multi faith families. Unfortunately, some religious leaders encourage converts to see their former faith and those of their family members, if different from them, in negative light and influence them to try to convert their families, even their parents. This attitude has resulted in many cases of religious harassment and unethical death bed conversion and discord within the family. Everyone has the right to their belief and funeral choices. Epitaph Foundation offers you the opportunity to make known your choice and a public request that your family and friends should respect.

Why don't such family follow the example of Ms. Bano Rashid, a Kurdish Iraqi who was shot dead by the psychopath Anders Behring Breivik in Norway???

Although a Muslim, the family opt for both Christian and Muslim rites. The best of both world!

To those converts, christin, muslim, buddist, etc..  gives your elder a breather ... they raised you up before you convert yourself. Unless your elders converted before their passing, respect their faith or do what Ms. Rashid family did in Norway.
