He did not sell the car, he insisted. It was stolen. So said Mr Rudy Zainal Abidin, 34, a businessman accused of selling a car he had rented here to a Malaysian.

He was responding to The New Paper’s report on Thursday, in which a car rental company claimed that Mr Rudy had lied that the Toyota Altis he rented from them was stolen.

Mr Rudy had rented the car for a weekend trip to Malaysia and was supposed to return the car three days later, but he failed to show up.
He later called to say that his bag, which contained the car keys, had been stolen, and that he later found the car missing from where it had been parked.

He said: “I lost my $4,000 laptop and ended up being accused of selling a car for a measly sum of RM7,000 (S$2,900). It doesn’t make sense for me to go through all this trouble."
