A woman lost custody of her kids to her in-laws so she allegedly plotted to have her young children murder them.

Leticia Silva, 31, of Florida, US, is accused of sending her 7 and 9 year old daughters a knife by mail while she was in jail last December.

Christy Wallace of the Pitt County Sheriff's office told NBC News that Silva allegedly instructed the girls to use the knife to murder their paternal grandparents in North Carolina, US.

She added that Silva's daughter have been living with her in-laws for 7 years after Silva lost custody of her children when she got arrested and sent to prison for possession of methamphetamines.

The murder plot was foiled after the girls' grandmother found the knife under the one of their pillows in early February.

Their grandmother then brought the girls to the sherrif's office where they revealed that their mother had told them to kill their grandparents with the knife.

Investigations are underway and while police do not know the motive of the murder plan, Silva's friend, Mary Snell told NBC News that Silva was determined to regain custody of her children.

She said: "Her one goal in life was to get them back."

Silva turned herself into the Pitt County Detention Center on Monday, March 5, and has been charged with four counts of first-degree solicitation to commit murder.
