Benedict Cumberbatch announces his engagement, women all over the world weep

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch announced his engagement the old-fashioned way on Wednesday – by placing a notice in The Times newspaper.

The 38-year-old star of Sherlock and The Imitation Game is to marry Oxford-educated British theatre director Sophie Hunter, 36. The couple have reportedly been dating for several months.

Hunter not only directs, but acts and sings as well. The couple has even appeared on-screen together in a 2009 thriller, Burlesque Fairytales, which appears to have been where they met.

The notice said: “The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.”

The actor has previously described his ideal girlfriend as someone who knows she "doesn’t have to get all decked out to look good is sexy."

“A woman who can make you feel smart with her conversation skills is also sexy. I believe the sense of humour is important. I also think someone who is good at working with others is sexy."

“It’s like playing a tennis doubles match. You need to work well together if you are to stay partners for a long time.”

Cumberbatch is one of Britain’s most successful actors, known for playing complicated but brilliant figures such as super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes and computing pioneer Alan Turing.

The announcement threatens to break the hearts of many of his devoted fans.
