Hear hear: American Idol reveals voices of top 24 finalists before new season starts
American Idol has been trying to find new ways to boost viewer ratings.
After shows like The X Factor and The Voice grabbed attention on the airwaves, Idol seems to have lost some of its support base.
For its latest season, which premieres on Jan 7, the people behind the long-running singing contest decided to do something very drastic: They released a teaser trailer revealing the Top 24 contestants.
But before you say "spoiler alert", rest assured.
Only the contestants' voices are revealed in the clip - "an Idol first” says host Ryan Seacrest.
“Before we even show you the auditions, we’re going to introduce you to the Top 24.
You will fall in love with them, you’ll root for them, and you’ll vote for them. But right now, you will hear them.” - American Idol host Ryan Seacrest
Then, 24 silhouettes appear singing Nina Simone‘s 'Feeling Good'.
After listening to their voices, you'll understand why judge Keith Urban tweeted that this may be the best season of Idol yet.
A new face appears alongside judges Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr: Scott Borchetta, who discovered Taylor Swift, is the new in-house mentor.
He replaces former mentors Randy Jackson and Jimmy Iovine in prepping the talent for each week’s live show.
Expect other restructuring: Both the performance and results will be shown on the same night.

American Idol has been hyping its return to FOX with several television spots that teases the city-to-city auditions and the infectious chemistry on the judging panel. In a brand-new promo for Season 14, the singing competition took on a different approach and “revealed” the Top 24 contestants ahead of the show’s January 7 premiere date.
“Now tonight, it’s an Idol first,” host Ryan Seacrest says in the clip. “Before we even show you the auditions, we’re going to introduce you to the Top 24. You will fall in love with them, you’ll root for them, and you’ll vote for them. But right now, you will hear them.”
