Johnny Depp and Denzel Washington among stars that are 'overpaid', says Forbes

Forbes has been known to rank celebrities according to their net worth, but if there's one list any celebrity would not want to be in is the Most Overpaid Actors list.

Actors like Johnny Depp, Adam Sandler, Sandra Bullock, Denzel Washington and others are a part of this very unfortunate list.

How did their names get thrown in?

Forbes compiled the list using each actor's estimated earnings from their Celebrity 100 list and the last three films they starred in before June 2014. The films considered do not consist of animated films or movies where the actor appears in a very small role, or movies that were shown in less than 2,000 theatres.

They then looked at how much the movies cost and compared it to how much the movies made, to find out whether the actors deserved their fat pay packets.

Below is Forbes Most Overpaid Actors in Hollywood list.

  1. Adam Sandler : US$3.20 (S$4.23) returns for every US$1 (S$1.32) paid.
Although his movie Grown Ups 2 was a success, it could not compensate for the losses he suffered from Jack and Jill and That's My Boy.

  2. Johnny Depp: US$4.10 returns for every US$1 paid.
His movies are usually a very big hit, but Forbes deemed that he was overpaid for movies like The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows.

  3. Ben Stiller: US$4.80 returns for every US$1 paid.
Stiller's latest films like Tower Heist and The Watch didn't do well enough to justify his earnings from those movies.

  4. Ryan Reynolds: US$4.90 returns for every US$1 paid.
R.I.P.D. was such a huge flop that it affected his return number very badly.

  5. Tom Hanks: US$5.20 returns for every US$1 paid.
Cloud Atlas, where he played 6 different roles, was a very expensive movie and a very expensive flop.

  6. Will Ferrell: US$6.60 returns for every US$1 paid.
It is normally very hard for comedies to do extremely well in theatres around the world, which is why even though Ferrell's films like The Campaign and The Other Guys did alright, they still didn't do well enough to get him off this list.

  7. Channing Tatum: US$6.70 returns for every US$1 paid.
You'd be surprised to see him on the list considering most of his movies did well, but because Magic Mike did too well, movies like White House Down actually pulled him down and made him seem overpaid. But Forbes has said that they didn't think Tatum deserved to be on this list.

  8. Denzel Washington: US$6.90 returns for every US$1 paid.
Due to his status, Washington gets paid huge sums of money all the time. It also adds the pressure of his movies having to do well, and because his recent movies did not meet the mark, his returns were not good.

  9. Sandra Bullock: US$9 returns for every US$1 paid.
Just like Channing Tatum, Bullock is not considered overpaid, but the earnings from profits from movies like The Blind Side and Gravity make her look overpaid.

  10. Ben Affleck: US$9.37 returns for every US$1 paid.
The sad thing about Affleck is that he's only on the list because of his movie Runner Runner which grossed just US$63 million at the global box office.
