Who's on top? And who's a flop? Our headmistress of haute couture JEANMARIE TAN grades the best- and worst-dressed celebrities of the week

DISTINCTION

A-

COCO

CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City

Gown: Christian Siriano

Thank you, Ms Rocha, for serving up drama worthy of the occasion.

The poised Canadian model worked the hell out of this vintage-esque black-and-white ensemble featuring a striking embroidered mermaid skirt and that black Heather Huey hat adds to the overall fierceness.

RIHANNA

CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City

Gown: Adam Selman

I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't recovered from the shock of Rihanna's scandalous see-through Swarovski crystal-encrusted "naked dress".

To be honest, the brazen Barbadian pop star looks stunning and the retro vibe of the fur stole and matching glittery gloves and headscarf would have scored an easy A, if not for two very prominent reasons.

Exposed nipples will never be classy in any book. Going THAT topless - and let's not forget, bottomless - also pushes the whole thing to a rather obscene level. Someone also needs to introduce her to a little thing called lining.

SHAILENE WOODLEY

The Fault In Our Stars premiere in New York City

Gown: Ralph Lauren

Looking good, sunshine! Who knew banana yellow is the US actress' colour? She's absolutely radiant in this simple yet sleek strapless peplum column gown.

BLAKE LIVELY

CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City

Dress: Michael Kors

Shoes: Casadei

Did the US actress just step off the set of an Austin Powers movie? I'm not sure why Lively styled herself as a 60s bombshell by pairing the beaded olive mini-dress with a hairband and teased Barbarella-inspired waves, but it sure doesn't live up to her previous outings.

C

AMANDA SEYFRIED

Cle de Peau Beaute promotional event in Tokyo

Dress: Lanvin

Shoes: Rupert Sanderson

Well, it's official then - German actress Diane Kruger is the only celeb with the magical power to make such fussy black doily frocks sing. US actress Seyfried is obviously struggling to figure it out. The look on her face says it all, doesn't it?

BARELY PASS

D

KERI RUSSELL

CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City

Gown: Rosie Assoulin

A pity nobody responded to the US actress' silent cry for help to remove that sad-looking, awkwardly-draped sash the colour of dirty dishwater. Actually, it's the only interesting feature of her painfully plain black and white gown. Unfortunately, it's also the ugliest.

D

LUPITA NYONG'O

CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City

Top and culottes: Suno

Shoes: Sophia Webster

Send in the clowns! The Kenyan starlet needs to step back into the box and start picking ONE colour or ONE print at a time, because this shiny multi-coloured striped get-up is one bad circus costume.

D

MARION COTILLARD

CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City

Dress and shoes: Christian Dior

The French actress should stop thinking she can make Dior's weirdest outfits work because her style mojo is slipping drastically again. This white embroidered lace frock will be much improved if those absurd "wing things" would just fly away and leave her alone.

MARIAH CAREY

Fresh Air Fund gala in New York City

Gown: Atelier Versace

I guess I should be grateful that though the US pop diva is giving us more than an eyeful of her out-of-control cleavage in this shimmery light blue number, she's not freeing her nipples just yet. Still, stop it. Just stop abusing fingerless gloves and gowns meant for size 0 stick insects.
