Top 10 moments at Golden Globes, courtesy of TNP's 'golden' girls

Hollywood's anticipated awards season has officially begun with the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

This year's star-studded ceremony was extra special for The New Paper, as we were the only Singapore media reporting live from the red carpet and press room at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles yesterday..

The annual event, organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, saw the return of British actor Ricky Gervais as host for the fourth time.

And in the three-hour long ceremony, which honours the best in film and television, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his The Revenant leading man Leonardo DiCaprio were the expected big winners.

But on the TV side, new series Mozart In The Jungle triumphed over popular favourites such as Orange Is The New Black and Veep.

Our two "Girls at the Globes" had the exclusive access to the A-listers behind the scenes, as we talk to them about their expectations and victories.

Here are the top 10 moments from our Golden Globes experience...

1 We made it into Jennifer Lawrence's BFF star squad - sort of.

TNP managed to get hold of the microphone and asked The Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy for Joy what was really the most important question at the backstage press room, where winners turned up to field questions after making their acceptance speech on stage.

How does one apply to be in her "Super Bowl" celebrity clique that consists of Amy Schumer, Adele and Emma Stone?

"We're starting a gang, it's like a small business. It's like high school," said Lawrence half-jokingly, before getting distracted by the cheering for Lady Gaga on the TV screen - she had won Best Actress in a TV movie or Limited Series for American Horror Story: Hotel.

2 Brie Larson is an unknown no more, thanks to her Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama win for Room.

But she still has a lot to learn about red carpet rules, especially when she turned into a typical girl mourning over her chipped manicure.

She lamented on the red carpet that her nails were ruined from lifting her gold beaded Calvin Klein halter gown.

She also admitted she could not wait to get her hands on a hamburger after the ceremony.

The stunned look on Larson's face when TNP suggested she was the front runner for Best Actress at the upcoming Oscars was priceless.

3 Pop star Lady Gaga might have lost her composure, stuttering through her acceptance speech, but she was calm and collected backstage.

The six-time Grammy winner told the press that she "always wanted to be an actress", having attended acting school for many years.

"I always imagined that I would have a long love affair with music and with art and with reading my books and plays, but I never imagined any of this. I am extremely honoured to be in the company of such talented people tonight.

"This is just the best thing that could have happened to me."

She said that an Oscar nomination would be "tremendous, just like this Golden Globe nomination and win is tremendous, but the true win is in the work".

4 Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Oscar Isaac was clearly a popular guy backstage as journalists begged for answers to the movie's questions.

We were close to getting his phone number, as he joked that we could call him to discuss Star Wars separately, but alas, the Best Actor in a TV movie or Limited Series for Show Me A Hero had a change of heart.

5 Talk about a throwback. Leonardo DiCaprio acknowledged that The Revenant was a risk that paid off, but it was What's Eating Gilbert Grape that gave him the biggest pay-off, career-wise.

The 1993 coming-of-age drama led to DiCaprio, who was then 20, receiving his first Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe nomination.

"I desperately wanted to do What's Eating Gilbert Grape and I was pretty proud of myself at that age that I was that passionate about something and a character," said the newly-minted Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for The Revenant.

"I got offered a lot of money to do this other role, but I waited for (Gilbert Grape). That paid off a lot for me because I got to work with pretty unbelievable people."

6 Matt Damon joked about how his space odyssey flick The Martian was controversially categorised as a comedy/musical at the Globes.

"No, it's not a comedy, it's a musical, and I've spent 18 years practising for it," said Damon, who won Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy for it.

His last Golden Globe win was in 1998, when he won Best Screenplay - Motion Picture for Good Will Hunting.

7 Stars, they're just like us.

Jurassic World leading lady Bryce Dallas Howard gushed about being extremely excited to be at the Globes as a presenter. Like TNP, it was her first time at the awards show.

"It's like going to a party at high school," she told us at the red carpet.

"I wasn't nervous until I realised that it was going to be live."

She added that she would not be drinking - just sparkling water for her - and she could not wait to get into the ballroom as she would be seated next to Dwayne Johnson.

8 All winners receive applause from their peers when they go on stage to receive their trophies, but sometimes it's a very different story backstage in the press room.

The Globes clearly ain't a popularity contest, as the underdog winners of new TV series Mozart In The Jungle and Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV movie Maura Tierney (above) from The Affair were given the awkward silent treatment from the media.

Tierney had to stare around the press room, waiting for reporters to pop the first question as there was no moderator to help out in such situations.

When a question was finally raised, it felt like reporters were asking pity questions. It was the same for Laszlo Nemes, director of Best Foreign Film winner Son Of Saul. He was asked only one question and was then ushered out of the room.

At the red carpet, publicists of lesser-known actors from low-profile TV shows such as American Crime and Transparent approached us, offering interview slots with their talents - which we politely declined.

Just give us the biggies, we don't care about the nobodies!

9 Rob Lowe confessed to TNP that he's "the underachiever in the family", even though he was nominated for Best Actor in a TV Series - Musical/Comedy for playing a lawyer in The Grinder. The reason? Lowe's dad is the real deal and his second son, John, is currently preparing for law school.

10 Jon Hamm was the biggest charmer with the journalists, calling them darlings and teasing the Australian press by imitating their accents. The Best Actor in a TV Series - Drama for Mad Men also joked about skipping the Globes after-parties for a night of bowling and ping pong.
