This week in...1996
A look back at Garbage's hit song, Stupid Girl, ahead of the release of US-Scottish rock quartet's new album, Strange Little Birds
You stupid girl /You stupid girl/ All you had you wasted/ All you had you wasted
Stupid Girl was the eighth single from Garbage's self-titled debut studio album.
It peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at No. 2 on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart.
Debuting at No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, it remains the US-Scottish rock quartet's highest charting single to date based on sales alone.
That was then...
The alternative rock song was nominated for two Grammy Awards (Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group)and an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.
The song was a crossover hit that played on both alternative and contemporary radio and it spawned several remixes by other artists.
Garbage's critically acclaimed album, which sold over four million copies worldwide, earned almost perfect reviews from Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and many others.
This is now...
Frontman and vocalist Shirley Manson, 49, guitarist Steve Marker, 56, bass guitarist Duke Erikson, 65, and drummer Butch Vig, 60, announced last week that their sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds, will be released on June 10.
It will be their first offering since 2012's Not Your Kind Of People.
This comes after a re-issue of their debut album last October to celebrate Garbage's 20th anniversary.
Manson told NME: "To me, this (new) record, funnily enough, has the most to do with the first record than any of the previous records.
"It's getting back to that beginner's headspace."
