Why we love Rathi Menon, 2014's Miss Universe Singapore
At the Miss Universe Singapore finals last Friday (Aug 22), the glittery diamond crown was placed on the head of pharmacy technician Rathi Menon, 23.
Rathi, who also bagged the accolades for Miss Brilliance and Miss Personality, beat out 11 other finalists to win the crown.
We've fallen in love with her and here's why:
1. She's intelligent.
Menon delivered nothing short of a sharp and intelligent answer during the Q&A segment, Yahoo Singapore reported.
Question: What would be the "worst case scenario" if the world becomes "deprived of the Internet"?
Rathi's answer: "It is these services that enables us to connect with loved ones near or far. Not knowing where they are or if they are in danger, I think that would be the worst scenario."
That was certainly miles better than the pageant's runner-up Arrian North (who ended up bagging the other subsidiary awards including Miss City of Dreams, Miss Body Beautiful and Miss Catwalk).
North was asked if "increasing Singapore's population to 7 million (was) a good move".
North's answer: "I don't see why we can't have more reclaimed land and bring more people in".
Erm ...
2. She's no bimbo.
The human resource undergraduate at SIM is certainly not your regular hair-flipping diva who can't string a proper sentence together.
Rathi, the first Indian beauty to bag the big prize since 1998, also has a super chic style and is unafraid of enjoying the more boy-ish things in life - she rides a 400 cc super four motorcycle.
That's just hot.
3. Zero experience. Who cares?
She's said she has no prior modelling or pageant experience.
But she certainly can rock the runway and pose like quite the elegant beauty.
4. Smart strategy
She's going to be strategic going into the international pageant later this year, telling Channel NewsAsia that she hopes to have an edge by having a global perspective.
"I think it is not only about the outlook when it comes to being a woman. Being a woman is all about beauty and brains, so it is good to not only know what is going around in Singapore. There are so many things that are happening around the world," she said.
We're behind you for the international pageant Rathi. Go for gold!
