Women steal the show at Starhub TVB awards
The women stole the show at the StarHub TVB Awards 2014 last night.
They were here for the annual celebration of the best in Hong Kong television soaps, sitcoms and variety programmes.
Whether they were former beauty queens, fledgling stars, acclaimed thespians or the happily just-married, they sure got the lion's share of shrieks from fans as they strutted down the glitzy red carpet at Marina Bay Sands.
Svelte actress Sharon Chan, 35, who tied the knot with her businessman boyfriend in Bali last week, flaunted her famously long legs - as well as her cleavage - in a shimmering white ballerina-inspired dress.
"You must be feeling very blissful now," said the red carpet host, UFM 100.3 radio DJ Huang Wenhong.
"Yes I am," Chan admitted with a laugh, which prompted actor Kenneth Ma to joke that he was "jealous" that she had managed to find Mr Right while he's still stuck in perennial bachelorhood.
That kick-started some flirtatious banter between the two, with Ma pretending to sigh and lament: "You don't want me."
Chan gamely played along: "I want, I will always have you in my heart."
Vancouver-born sweetie-pie Linda Chung, the winner of Miss Chinese International Pageant 2004, wore a colourful floral get-up.
"I picked this outfit especially for this event, because Singapore is so vibrant and the weather here is amazing," she told the crowd.
(Well, Chung obviously hadn't had to struggle with our humidity.)
The New Paper on Sunday found a male fan who gamely shared with us his adoration for Chung, often described by netizens as the dream girl of many men.
"She looks innocent, cute and pure," gushed Mr Huat Lee, an IT professional in his early 30s.
"Also, her acting has improved a lot over the last few years."
Other stars who brandished their "career lines" (Chinese slang for cleavage) were rookie actress Rosina Lam - better known as the younger cousin of actor hunk Raymond Lam - and Miss Hong Kong 2004, 35-year-old Kate Tsui.
Tsui, widely regarded as TVB's sex siren, was stunning in her elegant pink gown.
Some fans, however, disagree with the old adage that clothes maketh the man.
Ardent supporters of TVB's Ah Jie (Mandarin for big sister), Charmaine Sheh, stressed that their 39-year-old idol "might not be the prettiest", but her onscreen performances definitely surpass those of her peers.
"She has undisputedly the best acting skills among all the actresses here," said Ms Claudia Lee, 40, who works in human resource.
During the awards ceremony, Sheh bagged the coveted My Favourite TVB Actress accolade, while 37-year-old bespectacled actor Ruco Chan won My Favourite TVB Actor.
Gripping 30-episode thriller Black Heart White Soul was the biggest winner of the night, snagging My Favourite TVB Drama and My Favourite TVB Onscreen Couple for its lead stars Roger Kwok and Kristal Tin.
A repeat telecast of the StarHub TVB Awards 2014 will be shown on VV Drama (StarHub Ch 855) on Oct 18, 9pm.
