The police were in hot pursuit of this giant tortoise

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, is that you?

Not quite.

The police in Alhambra, California, found a giant tortoise wandering on the city's streets.

"The tortoise did try to make a run for it, but our officers are pretty fast," said the police department on their Facebook page.

The tortoise, named Clark, was later taken to an animal rescue centre, where his owners claimed him soon after.

Keeping giant tortoises without a permit is illegal but the police said Clark's family will not be prosecuted.

"We enjoy keeping families together, so an exception was made in this case," said the police.

Kudos to the Alhambra police for their sense of humour and their family values.
